Gladiators & Legionnaires: Training & Team Building in Ancient Rome
Treat your corporate team or private group to a total immersion in ancient Rome. BeyondRoma offers two exclusive experiences to discover the combat techniques of legionnaires and gladiators—ideal for building team cohesion (team building) or celebrating a unique and memorable corporate event.
Option 1: School of the Gladiators (Via Appia Antica)
Housed in a renowned historic building located directly on the Via Appia Antica, this program offers an immersive and guided learning experience, ideal for incentive trips and groups of all sizes.
- Guided tour of the Educational Museum of the Roman Legionary (civil and military sections: legionaries, Praetorian Guards, and gladiators).
- Physical training and instruction in the offensive and defensive techniques of gladiatorial combat.
- Provision of traditional training attire and use of the Rudis (the wooden training sword).
- Presentation of an official certificate of Roman citizenship to each participant.
Organizational Note (Capacity): For comfort reasons, the museum can accommodate a maximum of 45 to 50 people at a time. If there are more than that, the group will be split into two subgroups that alternate between the tour and the arena, each led by a separate guide.
Transportation Information (Important): Since the Appia Antica site is not easily accessible by public transportation, arranging a private transfer (taxi, minivan, or coach) is required to get there. We can include this service in your quote.
Duration: About 2 hours.
Special Team-Building & Olympics Format
For corporate groups (10 or more people), this activity can be turned into a full-fledged “Olympics” (inspired by game shows like “Intervilles”). Participants are divided into teams, each supervised and guided by its own judge dressed in authentic Roman attire. The teams compete in physical and mental challenges:
- The Bridge: Rebuilding a Roman wooden bridge based solely on a photograph.
- Knife and Pilum Throwing: Aim carefully to stick knives and throw an ancient Roman spear (pilum) at wooden targets.
- The Statue: Carry a Roman statue through an obstacle course while keeping it perfectly balanced.
- The Anachronistic Object: A treasure hunt inside the museum to find a modern object hidden among the ancient artifacts.
- The Roman Numerals Challenge: Solve math puzzles and addition problems using only Roman numerals.
- The Provinces: Match the ancient Roman provinces with today's modern countries.
Option 2: Nature Adventure Camp
This exclusive package is reserved solely for large groups of more than 30 participants. Located in the heart of a private nature reserve, this large camp is ideally suited for large-scale, outdoor historical Olympic-style competitions.
- Learning outdoor combat techniques (use of the sword, broadsword, and shield).
- Javelin-throwing and historical archery workshops.
- Team-building course and introduction to traditional "bushcraft."
- Roman Legionnaire Certificate awarded at the end of the trials.
At the end of the training session, a final snack (fruit, cookies, water, and wine) is served on-site to celebrate everyone’s achievements. A private round-trip transfer service arranged by us is also required for this option.
Duration: About 2 hours and 30 minutes (snack included). Allow an additional 1 to 1.5 hours if you add the lunch or dinner option.
Examples of “Special Team Building” challenges (Historical Olympics) available upon request:
- Historical archery.
- Fire-starting contest using flint and cloth or dried mushrooms.
- Throw gladiator nets and tridents at stationary targets.
- Reenactments of historical dances, featuring dancers and musicians.
- Putting old magic tricks to the test with an illusionist.
- Attempts to put on a Roman military uniform.
- Retrieving fruit floating in the water while your hands are tied, using only your teeth.
- Archaeological drawing alongside an archaeologist.
- Agility Contest (Ancient Games): sack race, throwing balls and wooden hoops into a basket while blindfolded, race with water glasses, and balance games on wooden balance beams.
- Final treasure hunt: Participants receive clues containing Latin symbols encrypted using Caesar’s cipher (letters shifted three positions forward). Once they’ve deciphered the message, they must locate the target and bring it back.
Additional dining option: Country-style lunch or dinner starting at €35.00 per person. (Menu featuring grilled dishes and typical products from local farms: antipasti, assorted grilled meats, side dishes, cookies, fruit, water, coffee, and a glass of wine. Customizable option.)

What are the terms and conditions for changes or cancellations?
Since every event is unique, the cancellation policies depend on the requirements of our local partners (hotels, private venues, or sites with strictly named-ticket policies, such as the Colosseum). These policies are always clearly and transparently outlined in your quote and contract.
-
Agency Fees: Upon signing the contract and paying the first installment, the agency fees are considered definitively earned and non-refundable, even in the event of a cancellation at no charge by the service providers.
-
Supplier Services: Cancellations of services (accommodations, activities, guides) are subject to the specific schedule outlined in your contract, based on the date the cancellation is notified.
What payment methods are accepted?
We offer two secure payment methods:
-
Bank transfer (SEPA or international): This is our preferred payment method. Any fees charged by your bank for the transaction are your responsibility.
-
Credit Card: You can pay directly online through our ultra-secure partner platform, Stripe. Note: A 3.9% transaction fee applies to the total amount for credit card payments.
Can I make a reservation directly on the website?
No, it is not possible to make a reservation or pay directly online.
Unlike automated booking platforms (such as GetYourGuide or Viator), we do not offer standardized services. Every event or corporate retreat is unique: we create a fully customized program to ensure the actual availability of our local partners, verify the logistical feasibility of your project, and tailor the terms to the specific needs of your group. After you’ve shared your preferences via the “Discuss My Project” button or confirmed “My Selection, ” a dedicated project manager will work with you to refine your specifications before sending you a detailed quote.
